Fourth grade fractions have a dirty secret: the arithmetic is the easy part. Adding 3/8 and 2/8 takes one small step once a kid truly believes those symbols name amounts. The hard part, the part that decides whether 5th grade goes smoothly, is the believing. Equivalence and comparison are the twin concepts 4th grade exists to install, and they are exactly the concepts worksheets teach worst, because a worksheet can tell you that 2/6 equals 1/3 but it cannot make you feel it.
Games and hands-on activities can. Here is what the 4th grade fraction standards actually ask, the misconception that trips most kids, and the games that fix it.
What 4th Grade Fraction Standards Cover
- Equivalence (4.NF.A.1): understand and generate equivalent fractions. Multiply top and bottom by the same number and the amount does not change.
- Comparison (4.NF.A.2): compare fractions with different tops and bottoms, using benchmarks like 1/2 rather than converting everything.
- Add and subtract with like denominators (4.NF.B.3): including mixed numbers and word problems.
- Multiply a fraction by a whole number (4.NF.B.4): 3 laps of 1/4 mile is 3/4 of a mile.
- The decimal bridge (4.NF.C.5-7): tenths and hundredths written as fractions and as decimals, and compared correctly.
Notice what is absent: no unlike-denominator addition, no fraction times fraction, no division. Those are 5th grade jobs. If practice time is short, spend it on equivalence and comparison, not on racing ahead.
The Misconception That Causes Most of the Trouble
Ask a struggling 4th grader which is bigger, 1/6 or 1/3, and they will often pick 1/6, because six beats three. It is a perfectly logical answer from a kid who has spent four years learning that bigger numbers mean more. The fix is never the rule "smaller bottom means bigger pieces" recited from memory; it is repeated physical experience of cutting the same thing into more pieces and watching each piece shrink. Every good fraction activity below is secretly this experience in a different costume.
Hands-On Fraction Games
Fraction Strip War
Cut paper strips into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths, labeled. Each player flips two strips and lays them against a whole; the bigger total wins the round. Ties (2/4 versus 1/2!) are the entire point: make players prove the tie by lining strips up. Twenty minutes of this does more for equivalence than a week of worksheets.
The Measuring Cup Kitchen
Bake anything, then hide every measuring cup except the 1/4 and the 1/3. A recipe that wants 3/4 cup of flour now requires actual thinking, and dinner depends on the answer. Doubling a recipe sneaks in fraction times whole number. This is the highest-stakes fraction practice most households own.
Clothesline Number Line
String a rope across the room, clip 0 at one end and 1 at the other, and hand out index cards: 1/2, 1/3, 2/6, 3/4, 5/8, 0.5, 0.75. Kids clip each card where it belongs. Equivalent values must share a clip, which forces the argument, and the argument is the lesson. Add tenths and hundredths cards late in the year to build the decimal bridge.
LEGO Fractions
An 8-stud brick is the whole; now what is a 4-stud, a 2-stud, a 1-stud? Build the same length out of different pieces and write the equation it shows. Kids who have built 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 out of plastic do not fall for 1/6 being bigger than 1/3.

Once the concept is planted, digital games supply the reps. A Note on Speed
Fraction comparison is a thinking skill, not a speed skill. Timed drills are great for multiplication facts and poison for early fraction reasoning, because a kid under time pressure falls back on the very six-beats-three instinct you are trying to replace. Pick games where the clock is gentle or absent for this topic. Save the stopwatch for facts practice, where it belongs.
The Bottom Line
Equivalence and comparison are the whole ballgame in 4th grade. A kid who owns those two ideas will find 5th grade fraction arithmetic almost anticlimactic; a kid who memorized past them will hit the unlike-denominator wall at full speed next year. Play the physical games until the concept is real, then let a digital game grind in the reps.
