Fourth grade multiplication is really three different skills wearing one name. There are the facts, which should be finishing up this year and heading toward automatic. There is multiplicative thinking, the "6 times as many" idea that quietly powers every ratio and proportion problem for the next five years. And there is multi-digit multiplication, where 24 × 15 asks a kid to break numbers apart, keep track of the pieces, and put them back together. A kid can be fine at one and stuck at another, so the first job is figuring out which skill actually needs the work.
The Three Skills (and How to Tell Which One Is Stuck)
- Facts fluency: ask 7 × 8 cold. A pause longer than a couple of seconds, or visible skip-counting, means facts still need reps. This gates everything else, so it goes first.
- Multiplicative comparison (4.OA.A.1-2): ask "Maya has 6 marbles, and her friend has 4 times as many; how many does the friend have?" A kid who answers 10 is adding when the problem multiplies. Very common, very fixable.
- Multi-digit (4.NBT.B.5): ask 196 × 5. Watch whether they can break it into 100s and the rest, or whether the whole thing collapses. Errors here are usually place value errors, not multiplication errors.
Facts First: Games for Automaticity
Facts are the one place in 4th grade where speed genuinely matters, which makes them the natural home for fast, competitive games.
Multiplication War
Split a deck of cards, each player flips two, biggest product takes all four. It is the classic for a reason: a full game is a hundred facts, nobody is grading, and face cards make great 11s and 12s for kids who are ready. To target a stubborn fact family, stack the deck with those numbers.
Buzz
Count around the dinner table, but every multiple of 7 (or whatever family needs work) gets replaced with "buzz." Mess up, start over. Zero equipment, works in the car, and it drills multiples, which quietly feeds factors, primes, and fraction equivalence too.
Dice Duels
Two dice each, multiply your pair, biggest product wins the round; first to twenty wins. Swap in ten-sided dice from an old board game to cover the whole table. For a solo kid, race the clock instead of an opponent, but see the note on timers below.
The Area Model: Making Multi-Digit Visible
Before the standard algorithm, 4th graders learn to multiply big numbers by splitting them: 24 × 15 becomes (20 + 4) × (10 + 5), four easy products arranged in a rectangle. This is the area model, and it is worth playing with on paper because it is the same picture that explains the distributive property in 6th grade and polynomial multiplication in algebra. The game version: graph paper battleship, where each player draws secret rectangles on a grid, and hits are called by area. To claim a sunk ship you must state its dimensions and its area, which is the area model played backward.

A Word About Timers
Timed practice builds automaticity, but it also builds anxiety in kids who are not ready for it, and 4th grade is prime season for deciding math is scary. The rule of thumb: race the clock only on facts the kid already gets right untimed. Speed should be the last coat of paint, never the teaching tool. If practice sessions already come with tears, drop the timer entirely for a month and watch what happens.
