Prodigy works. For a lot of families it is the first math app a child actually asks to open, and that is not nothing. But it is built for elementary school, and kids keep growing while the game stays where it is. We hear the same sentence from parents almost every week, in almost the same words: "He's 100%'d Prodigy. What's next?"

2. The math is easy, and not in a good way

Watch a session. If they answer without reading the whole question, and the misses are careless rather than confused, the practice is below their level. Below-level practice builds speed, not skill. It also teaches a quiet, bad lesson: that math games are things you get through rather than things that make you think.

One honest caveat here: check the grade setting first. If Prodigy is set to the grade your child was in two years ago, fix that before you conclude anything. If the grade is right and the questions still feel trivial, it is the game, not the setting.

3. Sessions got shorter without anyone deciding that

Forty-minute sessions that are now twelve minutes, with no rule change on your end, mean the pull is gone. Kids do not announce that they are bored. They just drift.

4. Collecting replaced practicing

More time on pets, gear, and trading than on problems. The reward loop is doing all the motivating, and the math is along for the ride. That is fine for a seven-year-old building a habit. For a ten-year-old, it means the game is rewarding the wrong thing.

5. They call it a little-kid game

This is the clearest signal on the list, and it usually comes out sideways: a friend saw them playing, a younger cousin plays it, the art started looking "babyish." Ten- to twelve-year-olds have sharp detectors for this. Once the detector fires, no new pet or world brings the engagement back. The social cost of playing a game they consider beneath them outweighs anything inside the game.

7. Their math moved on and the game didn't come with it

Fourth grade brings multi-digit multiplication, fraction equivalence, and angles. Fifth grade brings fraction operations and decimals. Sixth grade brings ratios, expressions, and the first real equations. If your child's homework is in that territory and their game time is still spent on facts, the practice is no longer reinforcing what school is asking of them.

What Happens If You Wait

The tempting move is to leave it alone. They are still doing some math, it is free, why rock the boat. The problem is that the gap between "bored" and "quit" closes fast, and the kid who quits a math game carries a conclusion with them: math games are boring. That conclusion makes the next app twice as hard to sell.

  • Built for their age band, not stretched to reach it. A game that lists grades 1-8 is built for the middle of that range. Look for something whose center of gravity is where your child is going, not where they have been.
  • The free version is the whole game. If rewards are paywalled, the free experience is designed to feel incomplete. Pay for insight if you want to pay for something, not for pets.
  • It adapts in both directions. Harder when they are cruising, easier when they wobble. A game that only gets harder loses kids on the first bad day.
  • Safe by design. No ads, no open chat with strangers, no external links, no selling student data.
  • A dashboard that tells you something. Accuracy by topic, strengths, weak spots. "Played 40 minutes" is not information.

  • Stop while it's fun. Fifteen minutes on day one, ending on a win, beats an hour that ends in frustration.
