Prodigy's own description says grades 1-8. Ask a room of 7th graders whether they play it and you will get a very different answer. Both things are true, and the gap between them is what this guide is about: what Prodigy actually covers in grades 6-8, where it stops working for the kids in those grades, and what to use instead when it does.

What Prodigy Actually Covers in Grades 6-8
On paper, the coverage is there. Prodigy's question bank maps to standards through 8th grade, so a student set to 7th grade will meet proportional relationships, integer operations, expressions, and equations. Teachers can assign specific skills, and the adaptive engine moves students through the content for their grade. If your only question is "does Prodigy have middle school math in it," the answer is yes.
That is rarely the only question. The content a game contains matters less than the content a child actually does, and that depends on whether they keep opening it.
Where It Breaks for Middle Schoolers
The game was designed around a younger player
Prodigy's center of gravity is early elementary. The art, the pet collecting, the pacing of rewards, and the tone of the writing are calibrated for a child of seven or eight, because that is where most of its players are. None of that is a flaw. It is exactly why the game is so effective with young kids. But an eleven-year-old reads the same screens and sees a little-kid game, and once that judgment lands, the math content behind it does not matter.
The social cost goes up every year
A 2nd grader will play anything in front of a friend. A 7th grader will not. Middle school is the age when "what game are you playing" becomes a status question, and a game with cartoon pets loses that exchange every time. Parents tend to underrate this because it does not show up in the app; it shows up in a kid quietly choosing not to open it when anyone might see.
The membership model gets more visible, not less
Prodigy's membership, about $9.95 a month as of this writing, unlocks rewards: pets, gear, and member-only areas. The math sits in front of the fun instead of being the fun
In Prodigy, answering questions is the toll you pay to keep playing. Younger kids accept that trade happily. Older kids are better at noticing it, and a game whose math feels like an interruption trains them to rush through the math. That is the opposite of what you want from a 7th grader working on two-step equations, where slowing down is the whole skill.
When Prodigy Still Works in Middle School
Three cases, and they are real.

- A student working well below grade level. A 7th grader who needs to rebuild multiplication facts and fraction basics is, for practice purposes, an elementary student, and Prodigy's elementary content is strong. The age fit will chafe; the math fit is right.

Middle school math practice is not one job. It is instruction, practice, and motivation, and different tools are good at different parts.

A Ten-Minute Test for Parents
If you are unsure whether Prodigy is still working for your middle schooler, skip the debate and watch one session. Ask them to play for ten minutes, then check three things.
- Are they reading the questions? Skimming and guessing means the practice is either too easy or an interruption they are rushing past. Neither is what you want.
- What do they talk about afterward? Pets and gear, or a problem they figured out? The answer tells you what the game is rewarding.
- Would they play it in front of a friend? Ask directly. A hesitation is a no, and a no means the social cost has already arrived.

Prodigy is a good elementary math game that is technically available through 8th grade. For some 6th graders, and for older students rebuilding basics, it still earns its place. For most middle schoolers, the math is there but the game around it was built for someone younger, and by the time they say so out loud, the practice has already stopped.
